VIP guest #1 was of course the A380. That thing really is big! It was waiting to start to Toulouse, but the start was postponed because of technical issues.

Downtown Bigband - Planten un Bloomen

Although it was raining cats and dogs on sunday the concert in Planten un Bloomen took place. We were really lucky, because it stopped raining exactly for the duration of the concert. Right to the end of the last tune it started again. Lucky day!

Hamburg Harley Days

This weekend the Hamburg Harleys Days are taking place on Reeperbahn, Heiligengeistfeld and part of the harbor. It's expected that more than 50000 bikes and more than 500000 visitors will show up. So if you're interested in the motorcycles from Milwaukee today is your day to see some interesting and highly customized bikes!

Makes me think: are there really people living in the Speicherstadt? I believe the floors of the houses are pretty much like lofts, so they could be attractive for young and good earning people...

While walking through the Speicherstadt I walked by the Kaffeerösterei, which I frankly never heard of before. It's a nice place where you can enjoy different blends of coffee and great cake, brownies, etc. But the really exciting part of the Kaffeerösterei is that you can watch them roasting coffee! From now on you'll definitely see me there more often! :-)

This is the same house I showed on Monday. I like the way the tree grew in front of the house. One could imagine that how it looked years ago, when it was only a small plant direct in front of the house.

Amazing, how empty the streets can be on a Sunday! This is in the middle of the Speicherstadt. Most of the space is not used anymore for cereal, coffee or the like. There are some persian carpet shops and a lot of young startup companies in there now.

Yesterday was a beautiful day, so I took a walk through the Speicherstadt. For the next couple of days I'll post some photos of that session.

I liked the view above very much, because the house in the middle looked a little bit a ship. Also with the green on it it's a nice contrast to the red that is so dominant in the Speicherstadt.

I couldn't find any information about that online, though...

This is the back of the "house". Only the front is still there - the rest was much too dilapidated, so they had to tear it down. The property has been like this for years. I have no idea if there are any plans to rebuild the house.

One of the downsides of living in a city like Hamburg is that you're pretty often caught in a traffic jam. I used the time take some photos out of the car. This is one of them.

Michel: Bunker Feldstraße

There is one more photo I from the Michel series I don't want to withhold from you. The building you see in the upper center of the photo is the shelter in Feldstraße, right next to the Dom. Beside being used as office space and a music school today it hosted the first studios of the Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk (NWDR) - the first TV station for northern Germany after the war.

Train or Autobahn?

While I was in Altona and took yesterdays photo of the # 01 1080 I saw that the loading of a car-sleeper train to Lörrach was about to start. There were about 40 motorcycles and 60 cars waiting to start their journey.

I never took a ride on one of these trains, although I know, that it's a very convenient way to avoid hanging on the Autobahn for long distances. How about you? How do you prefer to travel?

That's what steam locomotive number 01 1080 might have heard. At least part of it is now on display at Hamburg Altona railroad station. It's in the basement on the way to the S-Bahn. You can't overlook it! :-)

Garden Hotels

It's been a long time since I mentioned a place where I had a coffee. So yesterday I went to the "Garden Hotel" in Pöseldorf and had a Cappuccino in their hall. This is where I took the photo of this gorgeous fern. I remember seeing the Hotel in a movie a long time ago but I have absolutely no idea what the title was.
(An american family is on vacation in Europe, the mother gets kidnapped and the father and the son are trying to find and rescue her. Takes place all over Europe including Hamburg, AFAIR. A thriller... Does that ring any bell?)

I found this photo in a dusty folder on my hard drive. It has been taken on the way up the Michel.
The photo shows one of the floors about half way up. I would think they used this hole to bring up the the bells. Anyway, it was funny to enter this otherwise empty floor and only see the hole. :-)

S-Bahn

This is one of the S-Bahn trains approaching. The photo has been taken between Dammtor and Sternschanze, next to the Messe. As in any big city, the public transport system is a very important part of the infrastructure of Hamburg!
In Hamburg, it's organized in the HVV (Hamburger Verkehrsverbund), to which the S-Bahn, the subway, several smaller railroads, all the buses and harbor ferries belong. It is the forth largest public transport network in the world.
The S-Bahn will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. If you're visiting just get a day pass and you're fine! :-)

This photo has been taken in VIVO, Bahrenfelder Straße in Ottensen. VIVO was planned as a mall oriented towards the ecological and wellness interested people. When VIVO opened (I think, it was in 2004) they had only a drugstore and a couple of medical practices. The drugstore closed soon after. After years of vacancy they're now hosting a large photo supply store, part of the Hamburg cities administration and a couple of other stores. Probably not exactly what they had in mind...

Only: when I went around the building I saw, that they are undergoing a reconstruction at the time being. FC St. Pauli rises to 2nd league

Our second local soccer team, the FC St. Pauli, managed to get back to the (professional) second league after playing only in local league for four years. Thousands of fans were following the game in St. Pauli on the Reeperbahn.

This is the stage with a huge screen. Afterwards bands were playing until late night.

Interesting enough: after sundays post about Stuttgart winning the german league this is the second soccer related post in one week! :-)

Stuttgart wins german league Bundesliga

Yesterday Stuttgart won the german league and although I usually don't follow the games this last day was pretty thrilling. Schalke 04, the soccer club of Gelsenkirchen also had a chance to win the league after being left second at the best for 49 years.

To make the connection to Hamburg: I watched the game on this TV set in the Bar of Schmidt Theater. :-)

View from the Michel 2

This is the view you have over part of St. Pauli and the harbor. Did you know, that the harbor is the largest in Germany (no wonder, eh!?), the second largest in Europe and the ninth largest in the world? I didn't! In the world - hey Hamburg is only located at a river... :-)

Tomorrow is Theme Day for the month of May 2007 of the Daily Photo family. The motto is "City Exchange". That means, we all will post a photo from a city other than ours.

Although I posted a photo of the Michel, one of Hamburgs landmarks earlier on HamburgDailyPhoto it wasn't until this weekend that I walked up and took a look around. So, for the upcoming week (with the exception of Thuesdays Theme Day) the motto will be "View from the Michel" for HamburgDailyPhoto.

St. Pauli Alley

A typical alley in St. Pauli. Maybe not the prettiest place in the city, but with a very special atmosphere. Back, on the left side you can see the pirate flag of the local football team "FC St. Pauli".

With all the vandalism in the city, this one of the more pretty graffitis.
Hein-Hoyer-Straße is a street on St. Pauli, named after Hamburgs mayor from 1417, Hein Hoyer.

These waves are located behind the Thalia Theater, near Mönckebergstraße. I believe, they would be very interesting for skaters, if only they wouldn't be made of cobblestone. Are you a skater?

This sign, saying Halt or Stop isn't a classic road sign. Instead it is mounted in front of the Thalia Theater, one of the important, classic theaters in Hamburg.

This is a view of the harbor from St. Pauli. A day earlier the ship naming ceremony for the AIDAdiva took place here. I only could walk through quickly a couple of hours before the actual ceremony and it was packed...

#100 - Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten

I just found out this morning, that this is post number 100 of HamburgDailyPhoto.com!!! No cake or anything, though... :-)

This view across the Alster shows the famous Hotel "Vier Jahreszeiten".
Although this house is definitely out of my budget I would stay a night to write a review for HamburgDailyPhoto.com if they'd invite me! ;-)

Anyway, with this I'll take a short vacation and I'll be back on Tuesday.

Heinrich Hertz Tower

The Hamburg television tower is dedicated to Heinrich Hertz, the physicist. The tower, located in St. Pauli, used to host a restaurant at about 130m height. Unfortunately, the restaurant is closed since 2001. You used to have a superb view over the city from 128 m above the ground (the tower's total height is 279,2 m).

I was always wondering what these machines under the Maredo Steak House are good for...
Are they for the air condition in the restaurant or for the refrigerated warehouse? Or are they simply to blow some fresh air into this parking garage?

Eisenbahn-Bundesamt

The new building at the S-Bahn station "Sternschanze" is this new site of the german railroad administration, the Eisenbahn-Bundesamt. It is built in a very open style with lots of windows, a bit like the Berliner Bogen.

I almost walked by this entrance on my way through Sternschanze, one of the districts of Hamburg. Schanzenstraße, the street where I took this photo, has a lot of traffic, whereas this courtyard seemed quiet and peaceful.

Laeiszhalle - Musikhalle Hamburg

Is it really true? I never posted a photo of Hamburgs concert hall, the Laeiszhalle?
This beautiful hall was built between 1904 and 1908 and opened to the public in 1908 (we have to expect some pretty big festivities next year). Laeiszhalle is the home for all the big Hamburg orchestras: Philharmoniker Hamburg, Hamburger Symphoniker, NDR Sinfonieorchester, Landesjugendorchester Hamburg and KlassikPhilharmonie Hamburg.
It was named after the shipowner Carl Laeisz, who gave a huge amount of money to the city by will for a concert hall.
